A volunteer’s observation

We’ve been very pessimistic about these elections. We were expecting mammoth disasters that might involve any or some of the following:

- martial law

- hacked PCOS machines / corrupted cards

- pocket riots

- PCOS machines conking out

- disenfranchised voters

And it’s true, there were some depressing incidents. At least eight people perished due to elections. Some machines did conk out. Some election precincts actually failed in transmitting the results. But because of the automation, things happened so fast that there were only glitches and cheating was kept to a minimum. Perhaps cheating happened outside the precinct but I can’t imagine it happening inside the machines. Maybe the cheaters will figure this out in the next elections, but not this year.

San Beda Alabang. Already printing out results at 9pm

I’m being asked to write a report about what happened in our Cupang precinct and no I won’t be publishing that here but I realized it would also be good if we not only have informed volunteers but informed voters as well.

A few pointers for future elections:

  1. If time is at your disposal (and to many it is, since it’s a non-work day), vote AFTER LUNCH. I don’t know why everybody wants to vote first thing in the morning. Everyone is still getting used to the process, automated or not. You will not run out of ballots. You will not be less responsible if you do it later in the day.
  2. Bring your voter’s ID. If you don’t have one, bring an ID. Or even better, bring proof that you’re registered. It’s the easiest way to figure out your way into the maze of polling centers. But it would be best if…
  3. You find out your precinct and your cluster before you go to the polling center. You can find out in your parish, in your barangay hall, and even online! I’m still trying to figure out though why many of the late registrants weren’t on the list. It’s baffling that a lot of the late registrants were still disenfranchised. I don’t have an answer to this except I know that it’s frustrating but cursing volunteers to high heavens will not put your name on the book of voters.
  4. Come equipped! Bring a kodigo–list of the people you’re voting for. Bring bottled water and maybe snacks.
  5. If you’re disenfranchised or if you witness anything that you’re suspicious about, please file a protest. You may approach a volunteer or a Comelec official. It’s a little tedious because you have to file a protest/challenge form but this is helpful because it’s on record and this can be the basis of evaluations that will help improve elections.
  6. Bear in mind that the volunteers are just people who can assist you, not help you vote. And the BEI (Board of Election Inspectors) are just teachers who are aiding Comelec to help you vote. They also need their lunchbreaks, their toilet breaks and recess breaks. If they’re doing a good job, please do tell them. If you’re unhappy with their job, be a little more patient. They’re hardly getting paid (only 3k for that day), and they’re doing this for the same reasons you’re voting–civic duty. So let’s be nice to them. They might not even be able to vote! Because they might be assigned to a precinct where they’re supposed to vote. (This is another issue altogether and deseves a full entry).

But overall, it’s been smooth and relatively peaceful. I’m so proud of the Pinoys! And as much as there are kinks that need to be smoothened out, I would say most of us feel overwhelmed by the success of the elections. No more manual counting! No more dagdag-bawas! Hi-tech! So maybe it’s not over yet but the worst is over I think. Election-wise.

is it hello garci and back again?

i’m not in the know about politics. more so mindanao politics. but i do read the papers. and i try to put two and two together because it’s the only thing one can do. such as this horrible awful nightmare of a 57-bodycount massacre in maguindanao. i’ve been there for a total of twice in my life. at the time when the abu sayyaf were considered a gang, there was already a curfew crossing maguindanao to my lolo’s place in alamada, north cotabato. it was not a very safe place in the 90s…but this is another level.

family feuds were always a big deal. and it was always known that governments stayed out of it and picked the winner to help them out. GMA in particular, shared a very special friendship with the ampatuans. when hello garci exploded, “maguindanao” was in the conversation several times. “hindi naman ho masyadong problema sa maguindanao”, garci assured the president who also running herself.

i’m paranoid of course, and it’s always fun to spot a conspiracy. but here are the obvious connections: gma supported the ampatuans. and in several precincts in maguindanao–opposition candidates (including FPJ) got ZERO votes. please. lang. not one person? imagine the gratitude of gloria to the people who protected her interests.

are the ampatuans untouchable because they protected gma in FPJ town? i don’t know how that happened but it did. but how far can this protection go? seriously, kicking them out of the administration party (Lakas) is not impressing me one bit. of course they had to expel him. but. so. what. it was out of survival. ampatuans – you are the weakest link – if you give edu a chance to say it–goodbye.

gma is now looking for a way to get rid of being found out again. she’s really on a bad streak. although she deserves it. but just when she thought people have forgotten the fake apology…it’s all coming back to me now.

it’s frustrating after being glued to the television–between the grandstanding and rising bodycount….we still have to wait for something to explode. we have to wait until may to kick the bitch out the throne.

Monster

why i’m warming up to the “erring child”

every 10 minutes or so, the camera would close up on the most famous aquino. i am completely transfixed. the very public cory-kris tampuhans has led me to guess that the constant crying has something to do with this. they say the one who cries the loudest are those who carry guilt.

in one of the eulogies, a sr. remy talks about cory’s unconditional love for an erring child. she goes so far as to mention your name (in case the nation didn’t know who she was talking about). you took this in stride, and i know because the camera was back on your face again, with fresh tears.

finally i youtubed that long interview of your blow by blow account of the deathwatch and i could feel your pain and how you looked into your script so you can remember what happened leading to august 1. that was very brave, and generous of you. pinoys like hearing the details, it comforts us.

and as much as you have been an easy target all these years, with your taklesa and your gall, i realize now that as much as i was annoyed with the scratchy voice and the shallowness, i still watch the Buzz when i can. you were necessary entertainment.

and more importantly, i have come to realize certain things: that you don’t steal, you were taklesa but never intentionally cruel, not corrupt, and just frikkin plain real. you are royalty fraught with the problems of absolutely ordinary folks. and the only reason i know because you told us so. the cheating husband, the violent ex, the fights with abs execs, the bangayan with cristy f, the rows with mom. you were mad for the limelight, but my resentment and annoyance should be saved for those who deserve it. GMA, Caparas and Guidote-Alvarez are deemed worthy.

perhaps i am softening because your mother just died, who is probably the most honest president in the world who ever lived. but i think it has put to light how i look at you. they say a person at her saddest is revelatory. and you and your family have shown grace and gratitude to those who share your grief, when it is easy to be angry and stupid during the bad times. (marcoses-awkward / arroyo – gatecrasher)

i’ve always known you were a smart person hiding in that cabral strapless–stay smart and don’t run for office. is that possible? can you promise?

GMA’s idea of forgiveness

Why are you doing this?

Are you intentionally trying to irk people?

Why are you doing this?

What’s with all this pardoning spree?

I don’t know what you’re up to but it’s creeping me out.

It is as if you’re going down a grocery list.

Erap, Teehankee, Jalosjos, the murderers of Aquino and Galman, and now the four guys who took out Cochise and Beebom? Is there no end to this?

Are you making it up to us by declaring holidays forever? Don’t you know we’re in complete mayhem because of your finicky working calendar?

Is this your idea of penance for Holy Week?

What is wrong with you?
