Everything works. You know where to to go. The food is good. And yet, I was never really a fan of Singapore. It was always a bit of a yawn to be honest.
But not this trip. This trip was AWWWWesome.
Highlights being, your basic Hainanese Chicken and great company aside:
NIGHT 1 : Experiencing the crazy genius of many things, Geraldine Javier. We went to the opening of her art exhibit which was housed in one of those big warehouses giving that very alternative ambience to it. I could stay and just look at her work for hours. It looked like she worked on those many things for years.
NIGHT 2 : Best Burger. Ever. Daniel Boulud became famous because of his gourmet burger, and dammit I had to have one. So we dressed up, saved up and ate in DB Bistro. Also, night life! Whenever we travel, we’re just too tired to go out. But we were drinking like there was no tomorrow. And indeed there wasn’t much of tomorrow. Our days started at lunch and we’d end up in some schmancy drinking place. And what’s great was someone picking up the tab.
and of course…
3 – The National going acoustic for their last song. I’m just the girlfriend of a super big fan so on that last song I was like…what in God’s name are they singing??? (apparently, Vanderlyle) I’m not sure why he decided not to use the mic but just so you know, we were so close that I was able to touch his shoulder. And apparently, when someone so famous is like inches away from you, suddenly you have no idea what you want to do.
After downing most of that forbidden liquor in the Marina Bay premises, for his penultimate song, Berninger went down the stage and started walking on the frikkin chairs. And he walked until the very end. Hands were holding his wobbly legs (he did look drunk) so it was practically a body surf but vertical. And that was while he was singing “Terrible Love,” one of the three songs I know. That was just an incredible atmosphere and he went around the entire area just being all warm and fuzzy. Seeing as how Matt Berninger worked the very sedate Singapore crowd, he was Jesus for sure.
So when he came near me I touched his shoulder and shrieked: “I’M HEALED!”
I didn’t take this video but I think I’m right behind this person who took the video. We were so near!
